Qld COVID-19 – Thu May 21: Altered holiday for altered times / no new cases

Brisbane’s annual Show Day holiday will shift this year to suit the different circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the latest case numbers have stayed flat with no new cases.

There remain 12 active cases, 1040 recovered and six deaths for a total of 1058.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the figures were more good news, and “I want to thank Queenslanders for the incredible job in smashing the curve.”

The Health Minister said the numbers showed that “we are gradually easing restrictions without seeing a substantial increase in cases, which is precisely what we want to do.”

But he and the Chief Health Officer again encouraged more people to get tested.

“If you're unwell with any symptoms, go to a GP or fever clinic,” the Chief Health Officer said.

In another move to address the unique circumstances thrown up by the pandemic, Brisbane’s Exhibition Wednesday holiday will move this year to Friday, August 14th.

“For one year only, People’s Day will become the People’s Long Weekend,” the Premier said.

“The Ekka’s been the time when the country comes to the city. This year I call on all of us in the city to go to the bush or the beach for a break to support tourism and our regions.

Other councils will have the opportunity for similar arrangements for their show holidays.

    • The Chief Health Officer has updated the Aged Care Direction to deal with residents leaving the facility for a funeral or other compassionate reasons.
