Olivia and Oliver Queensland’s most popular baby names in 2019

For the first time in five years Queensland has a new favourite girls’ baby name with Olivia climbing from fourth in 2018 to take top spot in 2019.

Oliver remains the most popular boys’ name taking out the title for the seventh straight year.

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Mark Ryan said the data released by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM) showed Queensland’s favourite baby names had remained consistent over the past decade.

“While royal births and popular cultural phenomenon like Star Wars or Game of Thrones may see a spike in some names, Queensland parents clearly had their favourites,” he said.

“Oliver continues the streak it started in 2013 when it overtook Jack as Queensland’s most popular boys’ name.

“In 2019 Oliver was the clear winner, with 537 newborn boys taking the name compared to 393 for second placed William.

“It was a closer race for girls’ names, with Olivia only claiming top spot by one, bumping Charlotte to second.

“Charlotte had been the state’s most popular girl’s name for the past four years.

“My wife Holly and I, and our son Daniel, welcomed a new addition to our family in 2019, and while the name ‘Flynn’ didn’t make the list, perhaps it will in 2020!”

Mr Ryan said the RBDM data showed little change in our top 10 most popular names from 2018.

“New top 10 entries for the boys in 2019 were Hudson and Elijah, while for the girls Matilda snuck in at number 10.

“Willow, a new entry for girls in 2018, was again a big mover climbing from eighth to fourth,” she said.

Mr Ryan said while popular names over the past decade had been fairly consistent, there had been some interesting movements.

“2010’s most popular boys’ name, Cooper, ended the decade at number 18. Ruby, our number one girls’ name at the beginning of the decade, ranked 16 in 2019.

“Welcoming a newborn is a special and exciting time for families. I wish all the best to those who have been blessed with a new addition to their family and those expecting, and remind all new parents to take the important step of registering the birth with RBDM.”
