Finalists for Queensland Multicultural Awards announced

Some of Queensland’s brightest multicultural achievers are among the 28 finalists selected from across the State in the 2018 Queensland Multicultural Awards.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said he was impressed with the range of outstanding work being done to make Queensland communities more cohesive and inclusive.

“We had a record number of outstanding entries for this year’s prestigious awards,” he said.

“The theme this year is ‘Building a prosperous, fair and harmonious Queensland’, and that’s exactly what the finalists are doing in communities throughout the State.

“Their achievements will be marked at a gala lunch during Multicultural Month in August, where I’ll be announcing a special Minister's Multicultural Award in recognition of an outstanding nominee.

“Showcasing the valuable contributions of Queenslanders who support and promote a united, harmonious and inclusive community is what these awards are all about.”

Finalists include Whitsunday Anglican School captain Miss Imaan Ashraf in the Outstanding Young Achiever category. Miss Ashraf works within the Mackay community to raise awareness and correct misunderstandings about Islam.

QPAC is a finalist in the Government category for its collaborative arts-based programs including We all Dance, Songs of Hope and Healing which supported a refugee choir and the popular BrisAsia Festival.

Yeronga State High School is an Education finalist for its proactive work in advocating for and developing culturally inclusive practices for more than 30 years.

The winners will be announced at the Queensland Multicultural Awards Gala Lunch on 19 August 2018 at the Hilton Hotel in Brisbane.
