Townsville estate offers Australia’s first new home test drive

Prospective buyers at Townsville’s award-winning The Village residential development can try before they buy in an Australian-first marketing approach.

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the New Home Test Drive was an Economic Development Queensland initiative to allow genuine buyers to stay in a new home in the master-planned community at Oonoonba for up to two nights through Airbnb.

“For most people, a home is the biggest purchase they’ll ever make and it can be a daunting prospect to buy into a new neighbourhood or style of home without really knowing what you’re moving into,” Mr Dick said.

“Economic Development Queensland is giving people a chance to try out a new home and The Village community to reassure themselves that that this is the right move before they make a long-term commitment.”

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said the new initiative would offer potential new home buyers a unique opportunity to experience living in Ooonoonba and their possible new home before committing to purchase.

“The New Home Test Drive will allow genuine potential buyers to stay in a traditional home on a 400-square-metre lot, which is one of the most popular lot sizes in The Village,” Mr Stewart said.

“By staying in one of the homes, prospective buyers will see things they may have missed during a 20-minute visit to a regular display home, see how the design works for their lifestyle and try out the walking tracks, the fishing spots and the nearby amenities.

“It’s a fully-immersive experience that Economic Development Queensland hopes will eliminate some of the guesswork involved in building a new home.”

Member for Mundingburra Coralee O’Rourke said the New Home Test Drive is on offer by invitation only to genuine homebuyers who have shown interest in building at The Village.

“As EDQ’s flagship regional development, The Village offers innovation, affordability and housing diversity, and has a strong commitment to creating prosperity, jobs and strong communities,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

The Village is in the running for 2018 Property Council of Australia (PCA) awards for best master planned community, Australian development of the year and Queensland state development of the year, having won the PCA 2017 national award for affordable housing.

When complete, the 83-hectare site, 3.5km from Townsville’s CBD, will comprise 1000 homes with diverse size and price options for homeowners and renters, with lots ranging from 70m² to 700m².

Airbnb’s Head of Public Policy ANZ Brent Thomas said the company was pleased to be able to support both The Village and the New Home Test Drive concept.

“We want to play our part to encourage good design and help make our cities better places to live, to work and to experience as guests,” Mr Thomas said.

“Our sophisticated, trust-maximising platform will allow genuine home-buyers the opportunity to experience these innovative, architecturally-designed homes easily and safely.

“The Village sales team will welcome guests and will manage the New Home Test Drive experience from start to finish.”
