Domonic chases another gold at the Games

Three years after horrifically breaking his back on the high bar as a gymnast, Domomic Beddgood was atop a 10m platform, ready to take the plunge into a pool alongside a living legend.

Destiny saw Domonic and his synchronised diving partner Matthew Mitcham claim gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, but it was determination that drove him to overcome his injury and achieve greatness.

With Mitcham now retired, Domonic is this week hoping to grab his second Games gold on the Gold Coast with his new platform partner, Declan Stacey.

He’s also competing with Matthew Carter in the 3m springboard synchronised competition, and individually in the 10m platform individual category.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said all of Queensland would be behind Domonic this week, and wished him luck.

“Every one of our athletes has to overcome many obstacles to reach the highest levels of elite competition,” Mr de Brenni said.

“For most people, simply walking again after a spinal fracture is achievement enough.

“To climb all the way back up to representing your country at the Commonwealth Games – that just blows me away.

“All of Queensland will be cheering on Domonic to bring home the gold one more time.”

Mr de Brenni acknowledged the support staff at the Queensland Academy of Sport, including the science, strength and health teams which have worked tirelessly alongside Queensland’s Commonwealth Games athletes.

“The years of behind-the-scenes work often goes unseen, but it’s what helps our athletes go that extra one percent and ensures they’re performing at their absolute best while representing the Green and Gold,” he said.
