Hyper-loopy plan is an LNP pipe dream

The Palaszczuk Government is calling on the Federal LNP to invest in real transport infrastructure in the South East, rather than touting pie in the sky plans like a hyperloop.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said media reports today suggesting Malcolm Turnbull’s Investment Minister Steve Ciobo was seriously considering such a proposal showed just how out of touch the LNP were with Gold Coast commuters.

“The Federal LNP will say anything to distract from their problems, including their failure to fund urban heavy rail projects in Queensland,” Mr Bailey said.

“They are ignoring Queensland’s heavy rail needs in favour of Jetsons-like fantasies.

“Hyperloop is unproven and untested in the real world.

“Deb Frecklington needs to reject this ludicrous pipe dream proposed by her colleagues in Canberra and back our sensible plan to boost rail and road capacity for the people of the Gold Coast.”

Mr Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was already building key infrastructure that would significantly reduce commuter stress between the Coast and Brisbane, and going it alone on Cross River Rail because Malcolm Turnbull refused to come to the table on funding.

“Cross River Rail is the proven infrastructure that we need so we can have trains leaving the Gold Coast every five minutes in the morning peak hours by 2036,” he said.

“Population growth means we need Cross River Rail to be built now to take 18,000 cars off the road every day.

“Minister Ciobo should land his spaceship in Queensland and back Cross River Rail – a real project in a real state in the real world.

“Why do Sydney and Melbourne get federal funding for their urban heavy rail projects, but Queensland just gets thought bubbles?

“Unlike the LNP, the Palaszczuk Government has not and will not ignore Gold Coasters.

“We’re putting the M1 first, with two major upgrades underway– the Gateway Merge and Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes – and our 20% funding on the table to upgrade Varsity Lakes to Tugun, which would help improve traffic flows for the whole M1 corridor.”
