    Playground upgrade for Kowanyama

The kids of Kowanyama have received an early Christmas present after the completion of a new Recreation and Playground Centre, and the opening of the ‘Kowie’ Ramp and Roll Skateboard Park.

Minister for Local Government and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Mark Furner said a grant of $186,570 was allocated to the projects through the Palaszczuk Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

“These two terrific projects are so important to the Kowanyama community,” Mr Furner said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to providing funding for public infrastructure to keep children active and engaged outside of school hours.

“The Recreation and Playground Centre has seen the installation of new playground equipment, a BBQ, park tables and seating as well as landscaping.

“And I’m particularly thrilled with the Kowie Ramp and Roll Skateboard Park which not only offers a wonderful place for young people to meet, it also promotes exercise and a healthy lifestyle.”

Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Michael Yam said the funding was vital to bring these projects to the community.

“It would’ve been extremely difficult for the council to provide the playground and skateboard park without this important funding program.

“We are particularly grateful that these projects were undertaken so our community could enjoy these family-oriented facilities as soon as possible.

“They will have an enormous and positive impact on the liveability of Kowanyama.”

The Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program supports local governments to deliver infrastructurewhich is designed to create jobs and contribute to building safe, caring and connected communities.
