Celebrating Queensland teachers on World Teachers’ Day

Queensland’s state, Catholic and independent school sectors are joining forces to celebrate World Teachers’ Day today.

Education Minister Kate Jones said World Teachers’ Day gave Queenslanders an opportunity to stop and reflect on the hard work, dedication and commitment of local teachers.

“There are more than 70,000 teachers working in state, Catholic and independent schools across Queensland,” she said.

“I’d like to say thanks to each one of these teachers for the important work they do.

“We all remember teachers who inspired us - teachers who influenced who we are and what we are doing today.

“There are few careers that offer such a wide range of challenges and personal reward as being a teacher.”

Ms Jones said Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge would light up to honour teachers across the state today.

“Each teacher will receive a World Teachers’ Day ribbon which they can wear proudly to mark the occasion,” she said.

In the lead up to today’s celebrations, Queenslanders were asked to consider the qualities that make teachers so great.

Some of these qualities have been promoted state-wide as part of a range of World Teachers’ Day activities including a social media campaign and a specially designed mural unveiled in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley earlier this month.

The Queensland Government is celebrating World Teachers’ Day alongside its education partners — the Queensland Catholic Education Commission, Independent Schools Queensland, the Queensland College of Teachers, the Queensland Teachers’ Union and the Independent Education Union.

World Teachers’ Day also falls during State Education Week in Queensland (22-28 October).

Recipients of the annual Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools and the Queensland College of Teachers Excellence in Teaching Awards will also be announced today.
