New unit ends self-assessment at BSA

Complaints about the Building Services Authority will now be handled by a separate unit within the Department of Housing and Public Works.

The new unit will focus on process and staff conduct issues but will not review technical decisions about building industry disputes.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Tim Mander said the change would increase transparency and accountability within the BSA and was part of a major overhaul of the building watchdog.

“In the past, complaints about the processes or conduct of BSA staff were addressed internally by the BSA itself,” Mr Mander said.

“It’s never ideal to have Caesar judging Caesar, which is why we’ve set up an independent unit to make sure there can be no suggestion of bias.

“The Newman Government is committed to openness and transparency and we expect the same of our statutory bodies like the BSA.”

The new complaints unit will be operational from March 4. Complaints can be directed to bsacomplaintsunit@publicworks.qld.gov.au
