Q150 Exhibition celebrates Queensland’s regional art collections

A landmark exhibition bringing together treasured artworks from regional galleries across Queensland will open at the Queensland University of Technology Art Museum in Brisbane tomorrow night.

Premier Anna Bligh said the Twelve Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland exhibition is a celebration of the incredible variety of artwork hidden among collections in regional galleries throughout the state.

The State Government has provided $10,000 to Museum and Gallery Services Queensland (M&GSQ) to help them stage the exhibition, as part of this year’s Q150 Celebrations.

“This exhibition showcases some of our State’s most prized artworks, many of which people in the capital city would otherwise never have the chance to view,” Ms Bligh said.

“The 130 artworks featured come from 27 of the Queensland’s regional gallery and university collections, from the Gold Coast in the south to Cairns in the north and Winton in the west.

“The exhibition includes significant Australian, Indigenous, Pacific and European pieces dating from the 17th to the 21st century.

“This is a fantastic celebration of our people, our places and our stories during the year of Queensland’s 150th birthday.”

Ms Bligh said the exhibition comes to Brisbane from Townsville, where thousands of people enjoyed the collection from August 21 to October 4.

“More than 8,000 people visited the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville to view this remarkable collection,” Ms Bligh said.

“Thousands more are now expected to make the most of this rare opportunity in Brisbane, with the collection on display at QUT Art Museum until December 20.”

Twelve Degrees of Latitude: Regional Gallery and University Art Collections in Queensland was co-curated by Bettina MacAulay and Brett Adlington.

Featured artworks include:

·Goats (1983) by William Robinson from the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery;

·Last leaf (1988) by Rosalie Gascoigne from the Gold Coast City Art Gallery;

·Beizam, a hammerhead shark headdress (2005), by Ken Thaiday Senior from the Ipswich Art Gallery;

·Old girls…they talk in the sand (2004) by Rosella Namok from the Cairns Regional Gallery; and

·Pots and objects (1975) by Margaret Olley from the Rockhampton Art Gallery.

M&GSQ, Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum, Kick Arts, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery each received Q150 Community Funding towards the development of the exhibition.

The Queensland Government’s $4 million Q150 Community Funding program offered grants between $2000 and $10,000 to communities to help them mark Queensland’s anniversary in ways that were meaningful to them.
