Residents in Cooktown can look forward to reliable drinking water following the completion of works at the Annan Water treatment plant, Local Government Minister Desley Boyle announced today during a visit to Cooktown.
“The upgrades will reduce reliance on bore water by enhancing the plant’s capacity to treat muddy water during the wet season,” Ms Boyle said.
“Previously in the wet, the only water available to residents was bore water. The upgraded water treatment plant gives residents more certainty about their water supply."
Member for Cook Jason O’Brien said the project was important, not just for Cooktown, but for the entire Cook Shire.
“This is an important project for the community. It will help minimise the supply shortfalls that were sometimes experienced, as well as allowing council the scope to expand its water network in the future to service outlying communities such as Quarantine Bay and Marton,” Mr O’Brien said.
“This upgrade included the introduction of a new sedimentation unit with a 965,000 litre settling tank capable of producing more than 4.5 million litres of potable water each day.”
Ms Boyle said the Bligh Government had provided $480,000 towards the completion of the project.
“Since July 2006 the Bligh Government has provided $74.43 million to Cook Shire Council to help build essential infrastructure, deliver services and deal with the aftermath of natural disasters.”
