Local Government Minister Desley Boyle today announced $1.73 million in disaster funding to help cover the costs of emergency repairs completed in the aftermath of cyclone-related flooding in early 2009.
“Tropical Cyclones Charlotte and Ellie bought with them monsoonal rain and flooding drenching an area about twice the size of Spain,” Ms Boyle said.
“Cook was not spared and council was left with a huge clean up job on their hands.”
Member for Cook Jason O’Brien applauded council for the way they sprang into action.
“Silt and debris needed to be cleared from roads, footpaths and public reserves and local bridges and culverts required emergency grading and repairs,” Mr O’Brien said.
“The remoteness of Cook Shire Council mean residents rely heavily on roads, not just to get around, but to buy food and access essential medical services.
“Given the scale of the damage it is critical council aren’t left carrying the can for the entire bill – it would be a huge imposition on their finances.
“It's important to remember that Cook have played their part contributing $50,000 towards the cost of repairs.”
Ms Boyle said the joint State and Commonwealth Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements were an example of the Bligh Government’s commitment to working with councils in the aftermath of natural disasters.
“This $1,738,000 commitment takes the total amount of NDRRA funding provided to Cook since July 2004 to $76.9 million.”
