Education sessions in high schools in the Gold Coast region will encourage young people to be safe and watch out for their mates during Schoolies events in November.
Community Services Minister Karen Struthers and Fair Trading Minister Peter Lawlor said a number of education sessions to be held across the south east would give students key safety tips and information on drugs and alcohol.
“We’re working across government and with the community to help keep school leavers and the community as safe as possible during this year’s
Schoolies events,” Ms Struthers said.
“Police and Liquor and Gaming Regulation officers will talk directly to students about being responsible and safe and looking out for their mates when attending end-of school year activities,” Ms Struthers said.
Mr Lawlor said students were being told of the dangers to themselves as well as their hip pockets.
"Officers are warning students that the consequences of underage drinking are far worse than a hangover,” Mr Lawlor said.
“Adults caught supplying alcohol to underage teens face fines of up to $8000 and alcohol found in cars and public places that police reasonably suspect is destined for unsupervised consumption by minors will be disposed of or confiscated."
Safety education sessions will be held at The Southport School on the 13th November.
“The in-school sessions will also give young people information about their accommodation rights and other useful tips,” Ms Struthers said.
“We want young people to remember Schoolies Week 2009 for all the right reasons,” she said.
The Schoolies education sessions reflect one of the goals of Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland - creating safer and more caring communities.
Schoolies Week will be held from 21st November to 28th November 2009.
