Indigenous Elders from Brisbane are meeting with Community Services Minister Karen Struthers today as part of state-wide consultation for the government’s new seniors’ strategy.
The Brisbane forum, one of a number being held across the state, follows Premier Anna Bligh’s launch of a consultation and discussion paper – ‘Positively Ageless’.
Ms Struthers said she wants action on seniors and wants to hear first-hand about their priorities, their changing needs and their views on government policies for seniors.
“We’re asking seniors to help us shape their future. We want their ideas. We want to know what works and what doesn’t work for them,” Ms Struthers said.
“Today’s discussion will help us shape a new seniors strategy and action plan which will be released in the first half of next year.”
“I’m particularly keen to hear from Indigenous Elders. They have to deal with a lot more health, well-being, economic and social challenges. Their road can be rougher than most,” she said.
The ‘Positively Ageless’ paper includes topics such as protecting seniors’ rights, health, housing and transport.
“Elders from Indigenous communities play important leadership, social and cultural roles in their communities, which also has a bearing on their needs.”
The consultation will remain open until 4 December 2009 and Queensland seniors are invited to share their ideas.
