Exports up in the toughest of times

Some of Queensland’s brightest business people gathered tonight to celebrate the 20th annual Premier of Queensland Export Awards in Brisbane.

Premier Anna Bligh said the stories of exporting success highlighted the strong contribution that exporters continue to make to the State’s communities and economy.

“Preliminary trade figures show that the value of Queensland’s merchandise exports increased by 59.5 per cent to a record $56.3 billion dollars in 2008-09 - that’s up $21 billion,” she said.

“Those are impressive figures, especially in these tough economic times.

“The success of these businesses means jobs for Queenslanders and continuing to grow exporting activity is vital to growing Queensland’s economy into the future.

“Our population reached just over 4.4 million people this week and overseas markets are essential so our industries can expand and create new jobs.”

The Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards, presented each year during Queensland Export Week, recognise the achievements and capabilities of the State’s export businesses and industries.

“The Awards congratulate our excellent exporters for their efforts overseas and establishing Queensland as a reliable supplier of quality export products and services globally,” said the Premier.

“I sincerely congratulate all of the winners and finalists in the 2009 Awards, and particularly the 2009 Queensland Exporter of the Year Award winner, NOJA Power Switchgear.

“I also wish winners of the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards that will progress to the Australian Export Awards all the best in Canberra on 20 November,” Ms Bligh said.
