FUNDING TO COMPANIES BOOSTS QUEENSLAND ARTS SECTOR

Acting Premier and Arts Minister Paul Lucas today announced a major boost for the arts industry with $10.1 million in funding for arts companies across Queensland for 2010.

“Our many hardworking small to medium sized arts companies play a vital role in servicing regional Queensland, tapping into new talent and providing employment for artists and arts workers,” said the Acting Premier.

“Through the Queensland Government’s s2m program, funding of $10.1 million will go to 45 organisations delivering dance, music, visual arts, design, craft, new media, writing and theatre.

“This is the highest level of funding for the small to medium arts sector in any state or territory in Australia.

“Of this amount, $1.7 million will go to 15 organisations who will receive annual funding, with $7.5 million for 30 organisations that are already receiving triennial or annual rolling funding until 2010.

“Another $900,000 will support Industry Development Initiatives that address gaps and emerging priorities.

Mr Lucas said the 15 organisations to receive annual s2m funding had all been renewed from last year and continued to perform well, demonstrating evidence of artistic and financial growth.

“We have aimed to ensure a spread of art forms, services and practices balanced across regions and communities.

“The 15 organisations receiving annual funding are located between the Gold Coast and Cairns and many of these deliver their services statewide.

“They include the highly successful Swell Sculpture Festival that recently turned the beaches at Currimbin into an outside art show, Brisbane’s Expressions Dance Company, Arts Nexus in Cairns and the Queensland Folk Federation, which each year runs the Woodford Folk Festival.”

The Acting Premier said Industry Development Initiatives will support three ongoing programs in partnership with the Australia Council, along with increased support and opportunities for independent performing arts.

“The Queensland Government and the Australian Government are providing joint funding for Regional Stages which aims to create a stronger local arts industry by developing partnership between the community, local artists and national and international practitioners; Regional Writing to engage and develop quality writing; and for arts and cultural services in five Queensland regions,” Mr Lucas said.
