Our Women, Our State awards now open

Minister for Women Karen Struthers today announced nominations are open for the Our Women, Our State awards.

Ms Struthers said the awards recognise women and girls who stand out in the field of science, engineering and technology.

“These awards, in our 150th year, salute women and girls who support and encourage other like-minded women to take up education, training and jobs in traditionally male-dominated industries,” she said.

“Women are often the driving force behind tomorrow’s leading female scientists, engineers and information and communications technicians.

“Queensland women continue to be underrepresented in the science, engineering and technology industries.

“We want to change that, and we need to continue our efforts to break down the barriers to women’s participation in these fields.”

Ms Struthers said award categories include secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate student awards, an industry and business award and a community and public sector award.

They also include awards for encouraging women into environmental initiatives and promoting Indigenous women’s participation in science, engineering and technology fields, Ms Struthers said.

“The awards also include a special award — the Great Queensland Woman Award — in celebration of Queensland’s 150th birthday (Q150),” she said.

“The Great Queensland Woman Award will recognise and reward the efforts of one outstanding Queensland woman in achieving progress for all Queensland women.”

Nominations for Queensland girls and women across the eight categories are now open and will close on Friday, 11 September 2009.
