The Reef Catchments (Mackay Whitsunday) Regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) group will share in $11 million of Bligh Government funding to continue improving and preserving our environment.
Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson said the group would receive $900,000 for projects including water quality monitoring, pest management, waterways and wetland management and understanding the variability of our climate.
“Regional NRM groups are a crucial link between government and communities to put into practice activities to improve, restore and protect waterways, wetlands and green spaces,” Mr Robertson said.
“This funding delivers on our promise to create a cleaner, greener Queensland.”
Mr Robertson said regional NRM groups dealt with the big issues that confronted our state – biodiversity, climate change, water, vegetation management, erosion and soil conservation, weeds and pests.
“Regional NRM groups strengthen the community’s awareness of the value of
our water, land and catchments and they encourage people to become involved,” he said.
“Not only will this funding help NRM groups continue their great work, it will also support the Queensland economy and regional jobs at the same time.”
Other funding recipients include Condamine Alliance $825,000, Desert Channels Queensland $775,000, Fitzroy Basin Region $750,000, Burnett Mary Regional Group $750,000, Northern Gulf $800,000, North Queensland Dry Tropics (Burdekin) $750,000, Queensland Murray-Darling Committee $825,000, South East Queensland Catchments $775,000, Southern Gulf $675,000, South West NRM $675,000, Terrain (Wet Tropics) $750,000, Torres Strait Regional Authority $750,000 and Cape York Region $1,000,000.
The grants announced today complement the federal government’s Caring for our Country funding announced recently. Regional NRM is a partnership between government, industry and the community.
