Green Army to run energy-saving education campaign in Logan
Ten jobseekers from Logan will soon be enlisted to run an energy-saving community education project through Queensland’s Green Army.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said the project would be run by Career Keys with the help of a $173,250 Queensland Government grant.
“Queensland’s Green Army is a $57 million election commitment to employ jobseekers to protect and restore our natural environment and support green initiatives,” Mr Fraser said.
“The Green Army has been designed in response to the global economic downturn to keep our economy moving so we can emerge from these difficult times even stronger than before.
“Projects are currently being rolled out across the state, and over the next three years they will create jobs for 3000 Queenslanders.”
Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the community education project would start next month and run for 17 weeks.
“Participants will help establish a community-based service for the residents, businesses and schools of Logan to increase awareness and offer information on energy-saving activities,” Mrs Scott said.
“They will develop skills in administration, research, database management and marketing.”
Career Keys executive director Deirdre Foreman said participants would gain a wide range of skills and would start the project by researching current energy behaviours in the region.
“Participants will then help to develop marketing materials including a website and factsheets,” Ms Foreman said.
“They will also organise and conduct information sessions and establish a helpline to offer further information to businesses and residents.
“The project will have enormous community benefit and will enhance awareness of green alternatives through a local resource point.”
Unemployed people can check their eligibility and register their interest in joining Queensland’s Green Army by calling 1800 249 215 or visiting www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au.
