Queensland’s Green Army mission at Beenleigh State School
Beenleigh State School is set for a green facelift with the announcement of the Green Army’s latest mission.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said the Bligh Government had awarded $180,490 to the Twin Rivers Community Care Association to run the project.
“Twelve long-term unemployed or recently retrenched participants will construct green facilities and regenerate bushland at the school,” Mr Fraser said.
“Queensland’s Green Army is a $57 million election commitment to create jobs and beautify, conserve and rehabilitate our green spaces.
“Job creation remains the government’s number one priority and green industries are the perfect avenue to give people paid work, skills and experience for the future.
“During the next three years, 3000 Green Army jobs will be created through 2300 paid work placements and 700 green traineeships.”
Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said the project was warmly welcomed by the school community.
“Teachers are already planning ways to incorporate the new green spaces into their class activities,” Mr Moorhead said.
Twin Rivers operation manager Doug Parker said the project would start next month and run for 16 weeks.
“As well as bush regeneration and erosion control, participants will be working on a range of mini-projects including vegetable and natural bush tucker gardens, a greenhouse, natural walkways and a water feature,” Mr Parker said.
“We will also give participants job search assistance and placement support to help participants find sustainable work after the project ends.”
Unemployed people can check their eligibility and register their interest in joining Queensland’s Green Army by calling 1800 249 215 or visiting www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au.
