Deception Bay Indigenous jobseekers to join Green Army
Ten Indigenous jobseekers from Deception Bay and surrounds will soon be recruited as members of Queensland’s Green Army.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said the project would be co-ordinated by local Indigenous organisation Murriajabree Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Association.
“Participants will get paid work managing weed control and constructing fencing and signage to upgrade Deception Bay parks as part of this $140,000 project,” Mr Fraser said.
“Green Army projects are all about local people improving their local communities to create a healthier, greener Queensland for everyone.
“During the next three years, 3000 jobs will be created through the Green Army including 2300 paid work placements and 700 traineeships.”
Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said participants would also receive accredited training and support to move into sustainable work after the project ends.
“There is still a huge difference in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people,” Mr Wells said.
“This project supports the aim of the Federal and State governments to close this gap.”
Murriajabree director Uncle Alan Gill said participants would also construct a community bush tucker garden, which will be used by local families to grow edible plants.
“As well as 15 weeks paid work and vital hands-on experience, participants will receive accredited training in horticulture,” Mr Gill said.
“They will also learn how to operate load-shifting equipment, forklifts and front-end loaders. These are valuable skills that will increase their employment prospects enormously. “
Queensland’s Green Army is a $57 million election commitment to create 3000 jobs for Queenslanders over the next three years. It is part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
