Sixty young women from schools across the Darling Downs will take part in a special leadership day designed to encourage them to continue on with their schooling.
Minister for Community Services and Minister for Women Karen Struthers said the leadership day was aimed at young women in years 8 to 12 who are at risk of leaving school.
“We want to encourage them to finish their schooling so that they can reach their full potential,” Ms Struthers said.
“It’s part of the Bligh Government’s Q2 Strategy. We want three out of four Queenslanders to hold trade, training or tertiary qualifications, and for Queensland to have the nation’s strongest economy by 2020.
“It’s an ambitious target and it’s an important target. We’re reaching out to young women and giving them a helping hand to reach their full potential,” she said.
“We want them to take up leadership roles in their local communities and inspire other young women to rise to the challenge,” Ms Struthers said.
Minister Struthers said her Department was working in partnership with the Toowoomba and Darling Downs Youth Support Coordinator Program to bring the leadership day to young women in the region.
“Local women will also share their experiences and offer financial guidance to younger ones who may be going through tough times,” Ms Struthers said.
The leadership day will be held at Impact Christian Church, North Toowoomba on 10 June. For more information about the event call 4638 3088.
