Women make their mark

Two outstanding women from the Wide Bay-Burnett region are among nearly 200 women honoured in an online pictorial journey to commemorate Queensland’s 150th birthday (Q150).

Gladys Moncrieff and Dr Aila Keto feature in the Our Women, Our State pictorial history, which celebrates women’s contributions to Queensland since 1859.

Minister for Women Karen Struthers said Gladys Moncrieff and Dr Keto represent the significant contributions from women who have helped to shape Queensland.

“Dr Keto’s contribution to Fraser Island’s world heritage nomination is just one example of her tireless efforts to conserve Queensland’s natural heritage,” Ms Struthers said.

“Bundaberg-born Gladys Moncrieff, known as ‘Our Glad,’ toured the world playing leading roles in productions in the early 1900s, and was best known in Australia for her musical comedy.”

“These outstanding achievements demonstrate the important role women have played in our development over the past 150 years – their success stories are an inspiration to women and girls all over Queensland.”

An Office for Women initiative, the pictorial journey recognises women from all walks of life — suffrage and union campaigners, employees in non-traditional industries, community workers, entrepreneurs, performing artists and sporting legends.

“There are other women from the Wide Bay-Burnett region, past and present, who deserve to be recognised for their contributions to the community,” Ms Struthers said.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to nominate outstanding women for the pictorial journey.”
