Gold Coast’s trailblazing women saluted
Two Gold Coast women are among nearly 200 women honoured in an online pictorial journey to commemorate Queensland’s 150th birthday (Q150).
Minister for Women Karen Struthers said the Our Women, Our State pictorial history celebrates women’s contributions to Queensland since 1859.
“In the 1950s, Paula Stafford revolutionised swimwear by becoming one of Australia’s best known bikini designers,” she said.
“Pam O’Neill, Australia’s first female jockey, scored a treble on her first day of racing in May 1979.
“Their outstanding achievements demonstrate the important role women have played in our development over the past 150 years – their success stories are an inspiration to women and girls all over Queensland.”
An Office for Women initiative, the pictorial journey recognises women from all walks of life — suffrage and union campaigners, employees in non-traditional industries, community workers, entrepreneurs, performing artists and sporting legends.
“There are other women from the Gold Coast region, past and present, who deserve to be recognised for their contribution to the community,” Ms Struthers said.
“I encourage all Queenslanders to nominate outstanding women for the pictorial journey.”
