The Queensland Government today approved funding for the first project in its $57 million Queensland Green Army jobs creation program.
Premier Anna Bligh told state parliament today the Sunshine Coast Regional Council would receive more than $600,000 to provide paid work for approximately 40 jobseekers.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said it was part of the Premier’s $57 million election commitment to provide 3000 green jobs over the next three years.
“The Green Army is ready for deployment, with the first 40 jobs to start work on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Fraser said.
“The Sunshine Coast project will begin in July, enabling jobseekers in Noosa, Caloundra and Maroochydore to develop skills in basic construction, horticulture, landscaping, fencing, concreting or waste recycling, depending on their work placement.
“Some of the participants will work for the Council on landscaping projects at their regional premises and some will do further work on the Noosa Tracks and Trails project that attracts hundreds of visitors and residents into the hinterland for mountain biking, hiking and horse riding.
“This first project will also employ Green Army members to build retaining walls along the coast, a walking/cycling trail in Maroochydore, and undertake parks work on Kawana Island at Caloundra.
“The Noosa Community Training Centre will also partner with the Council to employ three jobseekers at the Briteside Recycling Centre at Noosa.
“The Department of Employment and Economic Development is currently exploring other potential projects around the state.
“The Queensland Green Army focus will be on projects of strategic importance to enhance Queensland’s natural assets, strengthen the tourism industry and promote increased environmental awareness.”
