Campaign aims to make every day fatality free

Minister for Transport John Mickel has expressed support for the Fatality Free Friday campaign on May 16 and encouraged motorists to make road safety a priority all year round.

"Motorists should make a conscious effort to be fatality-free every day, week and month of the year," Mr Mickel said.

The Queensland road toll currently stands at 112, which is 14 fewer deaths than at the same time last year.

"I congratulate Queenslanders on this effort but now is not a time to let your guard down," he said.

Mr Mickel offered some road safety advice:

·obey the speed limit and drive to the conditions especially in wet weather or at night

·always wear a seatbelt and ensure all passengers are properly restrained

·stay below the legal 0.05 blood alcohol content level

·when driving long distances, take time to plan the trip allowing a 15 minute break every two hours

·do not drive under the influence of drugs – police can now test for speed, ice, marijuana and ecstasy.

"It is vital motorists are aware of what is happening around them and be attentive, which means never using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, even to text message,’’ he said.

“Don't be distracted by devices such as GPS or DVD players. Make sure the DVD screen is not visible from the driver's seat and program satellite trackers before beginning a journey.

“Travelling with children in the back can be distracting. Don’t turn around while driving – pull over before attending to children.

"Everyone has a role to play in road safety - it is time we became a road smart state," he said.
