DIGITAL STORYTELLING SAVES LOCAL HISTORY

A high-tech project at the KelvinGroveUrbanVillage is saving significant parts of inner-Brisbane’s local history.

Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, today launched the second phase of the Sharing Stories digital storytelling project providing a web-based collection of stories told by people with strong connections to the area.

The digital stories are short, personally narrated multimedia tales that can be viewed on the Urban Village website — www.kgurbanvillage.com.au/sharing.

“The KelvinGroveUrbanVillage precinct has a rich history, being based around the former Gona Barracks that was bought by the Department of Housing six years ago,” Mr Schwarten said.

“The Sharing Stories project is helping preserve snippets of local history by recording the memories of people who grew up in the area, lived or worked there, or have been involved in developing the UrbanVillage project.

“In their own way, all of the people featured have helped make history and now have a chance to tell their stories to others — not just in the Kelvin Grove area, or to Brisbane residents, but to people all around the world via the internet.

“I’m a firm believer in the need to preserve local history, and I’m pleased the UrbanVillage project is able to do that through this digital storytelling initiative.”

Mr Schwarten said the first instalment of the digital storytelling project was uploaded to the UrbanVillage website last year.

The KelvinGroveUrbanVillage is a joint initiative by the Department of Housing and the Queensland University of Technology to create a dynamic mixed-use development on 16 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, just two kilometres from Brisbane’s Central Business District.

It has attracted major private sector investment in a range of residential accommodation as well as educational, cultural and commercial facilities.
