The State Government has released a new guide to help councils and local communities plan and develop arts and cultural facilities.Minister for the Arts, Rod Welford, said the guide 'Art of Renewal: A Guide to Thinking Culturally About Strengthening Communities' - was a practical resource for community planners.
"Arts and culture can play a vital role in the life of a community and this guide will empower people involved in the planning process to effectively achieve their visions for the future, Mr Welford said.
"It will assist in the development of specific community cultural projects such as public art, creative businesses, exhibitions, performances and urban design improvements.
"It will also help community artists to identify potential activities for Queensland communities."
A joint publication by the Department of Housing and Arts Queensland, the Art of Renewal guide provides information on planning processes, funding sources, examples of successful projects and practical tips and checklists.
Minister for Housing, Robert Schwarten, said the guide aimed to ensure that cultural matters were included in community planning which is undertaken through the Queensland Government's Community Renewal initiative.
"Our Government's Community Renewal program works with selected communities across the State to identify and kick-start new solutions to local issues," Mr Schwarten said.
"Community plans are then developed to gain agreement on local priorities.
"We undertook an extensive program of community consultation to create this guide as a resource that meets the needs of Queensland communities. It was trialled in the Townsville community of Vincent with tremendous success."
