A new neighbourhood police beat has opened for business in the Woodridge/Kingston area. The Minister for Police and Corrective Services, Judy Spence, said the new beat at 52 Ellen Street in Kingston had been established to replace the Logan Central Plaza Police Shopfront.
"The Neighbourhood Police Beat will provide an improved service by replacing the Logan Central Police Shopfront with more police who will cover a bigger area," Ms Spence said.
Four police will operate from the new beat, which will also be supplemented by police from the Logan Central police division that services the area.
Ms Spence said the additional positions of a Sergeant and three Senior Constable/Constables were progressing, and that four officers were operating from the beat until the permanent officers were selected.
Q-Build started the fit-out of the new beat in early February.
The Minister for Public Works, Robert Schwarten, said the total project cost for the Beat was $154,000, which had been funded through the Community Renewal Program.
"Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing, and renewal activities in Woodridge are run in conjunction with local residents, the Logan City Council and other government and non-government agencies," Mr Schwarten said.
The Member for Woodridge, Desley Scott, said neighbourhood police beats were strongly supported by the Beattie Government.
"I'm delighted that we are receiving more police facilities to meet the needs of this growing community," Ms Scott said.
"Neighbourhood Police Beats are a great way of providing a policing presence in the community.
"The beat in Woodridge will help officers to adopt problem-oriented policing tailored to the local community."
Ms Spence said Neighbourhood Police Beats helped meet local policing needs by responding to calls for service, assisting in the timely analysis of intelligence and providing proactive policing.
"Neighbourhood Police Beats focus on the needs of individual communities and have proved successful in reducing the overall rate of reported crime within the beat area," Ms Spence said.
