Kelvin Grove Urban Village taking shape

Minister for Housing Robert Schwarten gave a public update on progress at the $600 million Kelvin Grove Urban Village in State Parliament today.

Mr Schwarten said the development had now reached the significant milestone with more than 50 percent of the available land at the Village now under construction, under contract or fully developed.

He said one of the largest developments at Kelvin Grove - Indigo's $120 million Village Centre - was taking shape.

"I can announce today that Action Supermarkets has just signed a 15 year lease to establish a full-line store in the heart of the Village," he said.

"Chemmart Pharmacy has also signed a 10 year lease at the Village and in total both companies will occupy more than 2,300 square metres of retail space."

Mr Schwarten said the Brisbane Housing Company was also set to start construction next month on the first of its four planned developments at the Urban Village.

"The Company's first complex will deliver 32 units and is expected to be completed by the end of the year," he said.

"This will be home to the first residents of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

"The Brisbane Housing Company projects will complement the mix of residential accommodation being developed at the Village including a variety of student accommodation from one-bedroom units to shared-apartment style living as well as Queensland based developer Sunny Cove's 110 unit seniors complex. "

Mr Schwarten said a contract for the development of residential apartments adjacent to the Creative Industries Precinct was about to be finalised with a successful developer likely to be announced next week.

"The Kelvin Grove Urban Village is a great success story of this government and a bricks and mortar example of the smart state," he said.

"The project has already won 11 national and state awards from a range of professional and industry associations, including the 2004 Environmental Engineering Excellence Award presented last November by Engineers Australia. " Mr Schwarten said the state government would continue to give regular progress updates on the Kelvin Grove Urban Village as advancements were made on the redevelopment.
