Affordable accommodation boost for Brisbane seniors

Housing for older people in inner Brisbane will receive a boost with a Queensland-based developer selected to build a $22 million seniors' community at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing Robert Schwarten today announced SunnyCove Management Limited as the developer of the site, which the Department of Housing released for sale by expression of interest for the specific development of managed seniors' accommodation.

"SunnyCove's 110 unit development will give older people on lower incomes the opportunity to live close to the city and will be priced at the more moderate levels usually found in outlying suburbs," Mr Schwarten said.

"This development will also be a first for Brisbane in that it will be built on a smaller site over nine stories, rather than spread out over ground level.

"With space at a premium this is prime land just two kilometres from the city centre.

"SunnyCove's proposal gives residents the option to include furniture, meals and services for a modest rent."

SunnyCove is an Australian listed company and an experienced provider of accommodation for seniors with nine facilities currently under management and another six projects planned including the proposed development at Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Mr Schwarten said SunnyCove had a proven track record in developing and managing quality community-style affordable accommodation in Queensland and had won two UDIA awards sponsored by Queensland Housing.

"We are confident that SunnyCove's development at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village will attract a broad range of people looking for urban-style, quality rental accommodation, and assist in creating a diverse and vibrant community.

"One of the key reasons that I initiated the Village was the opportunity to address the lack of quality affordable housing in inner-Brisbane suburbs for people on lower incomes, including seniors," he said.

Minister Schwarten said the sale to SunnyCove followed the announcement last month that Campus Living would develop a 370-bed student accommodation complex at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Construction is underway on QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation and Indigo's The Village Centre, which will feature 213 apartments over a retail and commercial precinct at street level, including a full line supermarket, specialty shops, cafes and restaurants.

The Brisbane Housing Company also plans to build up to 130 affordable housing units at Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village is being developed by the Department of Housing in partnership with the Queensland University of Technology to create a mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, which is two kilometres from Brisbane's Central Business District.

The $600 million Village will incorporate a range of housing options, educational and recreational facilities and commercial outlets.
