STUDENT ART TRANSFORMS WOODRIDGE STATION

Forty high school students are making travelling by public transport a brighter option with the unveiling of a giant mural at Woodridge Railway Station today.

Transport Minister Paul Lucas joined the Woodridge High School students to put the finishing touches to the artwork situated in the railway station subway.

Mr Lucas said the mural was the latest in a series of State Government measures over the past two years to make public transport facilities more attractive and accessible for local residents.

"The Beattie Government spent $1.3 million upgrading Woodridge rail station precinct which included more parking spaces for commuters, the bus interchange, better disability access to pedestrian paths and minor roadworks," he said.

"We have worked with Logan City Council and the Woodridge community and incorporated their ideas into these new and improved facilities for the rail precinct.

"I congratulate the Woodridge High students on their mural project which I hope encourages the area's young people to take ownership of the station's amenity.

"This project is helping to create more of a special sense of identity within the community."

Mr Lucas said the students designed the mural themselves and painted it with two professional artists, to reflect their vision for the future of their community.

"These students, their teachers and families should be very proud of what they have achieved," he said.

"They have transformed the station subway into a vibrant piece of public artwork that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors to Woodridge."

State Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the mural was proving inspirational to local residents and visitors.

"Woodridge is a strong community, with a strong future and it's wonderful to see this mural reflecting the dreams and visions of our younger residents," Ms Scott said.

"More than 763,000 passengers travelled to or from Woodridge station in 2003/04.

"The mural at Woodridge railway station is one of three community artwork projects created by students at stations in the Logan region, as part of the Making Places initiative co-ordinated by the Department of Housing's Community Renewal program."

Queensland Rail and Community Renewal have joined Logan City Council and local schools this year to engage students to create artworks at Woodridge, Loganlea and Kingston railway stations.
