Local swimmers and families will be able to take the plunge and get active at a quality venue with the opening of a new purpose-built aquatic facility in Goodna. The Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport, Mr Terry Mackenroth, today officially opened the $1.8 Million Goodna Aquatic Centre, partly funded by the Beattie Government.
He said the centre would be of enormous benefit to Goodna residents and the wider Ipswich community.
"This centre will support a range of activities, including lap swimming, squad training, hydrotherapy sessions, swimming lessons, aqua-aerobic classes and recreational swimming," Mr Mackenroth said.
"The 25-metre eight-lane pool and hydrotherapy pool both have disability ramps and there is also a submersible wheelchair.
"The therapy pool is also ideal for learn-to-swim classes and no aquatic centre would be complete without a toddlers pool.
"This one has a beach entry, mushroom fountains and a water caterpillar.
"All three pools are protected by shade sails and are heated during the winter, so this really is a venue for all seasons that everyone can enjoy."
The Beattie Government contributed $915,000 to the project, of which $565,000 was provided by Sport and Recreation Queensland and $350,000 by the Department of Housing under its Community Renewal Program.
Ipswich City Council met the remaining costs of $945,000.
"The centre is clearly money well spent and I am sure the local swimming club is already planning future carnivals," Mr Mackenroth said.
"Quality aquatic centres like this are a very effective way to help more people get active.
"It certainly complements the Beattie Government's commitment to encouraging Queenslanders to play sport and exercise on a regular, lifelong basis.
"It is one of the best ways to improve our quality of life.
"That is why Sport and Recreation Queensland provides more than $50 Million for new and improved opportunities to help Queenslanders get active."
Mr Mackenroth said the Beattie Government was a strong supporter of swimming and aquatic activities.
"Since 1999, we have provided over $24 Million for aquatic facilities across the State," he said.
"We have also provided $1.5 Million to the Queensland Swimming Association for a range of participation and development initiatives."
Mr Mackenroth said he was delighted the Beattie Government had been able to work in partnership with the Ipswich City Council to deliver the Goodna Aquatic Centre.
"I have no doubt it will benefit the local community for many years to come," he said.
