Doors Open at Deception Bay Learning Centre

Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, says the new Deception Bay Learning Centre will help young people finish their senior studies or undertake further training.

Mr Schwarten who today joined the Member for Murrumba, Dean Wells, at the official opening of the new centre said young people who found themselves outside the traditional school system could obtain qualifications to boost their future employment prospects.

He said the $307,000 project was funded through the Beattie Government's Community Renewal Program, local community and educational organisations.

"Young people who, for whatever reason, have left the school system will be able to complete their senior studies or undertake training to secure formal qualification," he said.

"This is all about giving kids the chance to get the education they need to get a job.

"Whatever problems young people face, they should not be denied access to education and should be encouraged to work hard and get back on track.

"People aged between 15 and 21 will be able to access subjects including Year 10 English and Mathematics and courses from the Brisbane School of Distance Education and Brisbane North Point TAFE."

Mr Wells said students would also have access to educational support and information services to assist them to make well-informed life choices and confidence building activities.

"Creating employment and education opportunities was one of the key goals of Community Renewal in Deception Bay," he said.

"This centre delivers this and will give our local young people the support they need to get back on track.

"At the centre students will be able to participate in events and programs such as camps, a music club, the 'Building Better Bodies' program, and adventure-based activities including boat skills and navigation training."

The Learning Centre operates five mornings a week from the Anglican Church Hall at 40 Park Road, Deception Bay.

Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing. Renewal activities in Deception Bay are run in conjunction with local residents, the Caboolture Shire Council and other government and non-government agencies.
