Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, with the Minister for Tourism, Fair Trading and Wine Industry Development and Member for Albert, Margaret Keech, today inspected progress on the $1.67 million rehabilitation and development of the Eagleby Wetlands.Mr Schwarten said the rehabilitation was part of the Community Renewal activities in Eagleby and would generate new eco-tourism, employment and education opportunities.
"Work on the wetlands began in February, following a feasibility study and consultation process last year," he said.
"Already there has been significant weed-clearing, seed collection, planting of seedlings and work to construct pathways and bollards.
"The project is on track for completion in 12 months time.
"In this Year of the Built Environment, it is important that we work towards sustainable communities and healthy environments, especially as this South East corner of Queensland continues to grow."
Ms Keech said the Eagleby Residents Action Group identified the wetlands near the Olivers Sports Complex as a significant natural environment for diverse waterbirds and wildlife.
"Through the Beattie Government's Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative, local jobseekers are gaining valuable on-the-job experience working on this project," she said.
"Extensive plantings are underway throughout Olivers wetland and dryland areas, providing critical habitat for waterbirds and other wildlife.
"When the project is finished Eagleby Wetlands will be a world-class eco-tourism attraction and sporting and recreation destination."
Ms Keech said in total more than $5.6 million had been committed for 46 Community Renewal projects in Eagleby.
Community Renewal is a Queensland Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing in conjunction with local residents, the Gold Coast City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
