Mackenroth opens $3.6 million swim centre

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport, Terry Mackenroth, today officially opened the new $3.6 Million Gould Adams Park Aquatic and Community Centre in Kingston.

Mr Mackenroth, joined by Logan City Mayor, Cr John Freeman, said the first-class facilities delivered valuable sport, recreation, social and learning opportunities for local residents in the heart of their community.

"Today's celebrations are the result of five years planning and hard work by local residents," Mr Mackenroth said.

"The project has been a real partnership and shows what can be achieved when government and communities work together.

"It is this collaboration that makes our Community Renewal Program so successful.

"The Beattie Government, through Community Renewal and Sport and Recreation Queensland, contributed $2.12 Million towards the construction of the complex with the Logan City Council providing $1.5 Million.

"The new indoor centre includes a 25-metre heated pool, a splash pool for children, a hydrotherapy pool with full access for people with a disability and a community centre with multi-purpose hall, training facilities, office space and computer centre."

Mr Mackenroth said the State Government's support for the centre delivered on its commitment to get more Queenslanders physically active.

"The pools provide plenty of opportunities for people to get active," he said.

"Activities that everyone can dive into will be offered including aqua aerobics, junior and senior squad swimming, themed parties, movie nights and pool discos.

"Of course people can just enjoy a leisurely swim, which is still one of the best exercises for general health and wellbeing."

The Minster for Employment and Training and Member for Waterford, Mr Tom Barton, who also attended the official opening, today announced a further $150,000 in State Government funding to fit-out the community centre at Gould Adams Park.

"The Department of Employment of Training will contribute $39,000 to employ eight local young jobseekers to build storage, shelving, furniture and fittings for the fit-out," Mr Barton said.

"The rest of the funding will be used to purchase materials for the internal works at the centre.

"A range of new activities and services will be delivered from the Community Centre, including an internet caf, training facilities, community consultation rooms, a multi-purpose hall and general office space.

"Not only does this project deliver new services for local residents it gives local unemployed young people invaluable hands on working experience."

The Member for Woodridge, Mrs Desley Scott, said after years of hard work and planning she was delighted the centre was now officially opened.

"This really is a proud day for local residents," Mrs Scott said.

"This project would not have got off the ground without the commitment of local residents working with Community Renewal in the Kingston and Loganlea communities.

"I encourage all local residents, especially young people, to take full advantage of the new facilities they have right at their doorstep."

Construction of the swimming centre began in July 2003 and was opened to the public in March.

The fit-out of the community centre is expected to be completed in the next six months.

Community Renewal is a State Government initiative coordinated by the Department of Housing in conjunction with local residents, the Logan City Council and other government and non-government agencies.
