SCHWARTEN LAUNCHES YEAR OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, today launched The Year of the Built Environment 2004 at the new Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Mr Schwarten announced the Queensland Government would contribute $500,000 towards the cost of YBE 2004 activities being held right across Queensland during the year.

He said the $600 million Kelvin Grove Urban Village highlighted the importance of the built environment with its strategic planning, considered appropriate design and strong focus on environmental sustainability.

"The Year of the Built Environment gives Queenslanders a unique opportunity to consider their surrounds from the bitumen and boardwalks to the roof tops and everything in between," he said.

"It is a celebration of everything in our cities, towns and country areas that is 'built' - from houses and offices to schools, parklands and stadiums.

"By understanding our built environment, we can make smarter choices to build a better future."

Mr Schwarten said the Department of Public Works was the lead agency for YBE2004 activities, planning and coordinating the Queensland Government's involvement in the national event.

"A Queensland Executive Steering Committee, headed by the State President of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Wayne Petrie, will provide a state-wide and regional focus," he said.

Environment Minister, John Mickel, who joined Mr Schwarten at Kelvin Grove, said YBE2004 offers another opportunity to plan for the future in a sustainable way.

"Queensland continues to be the fastest growing state with 1,000 people moving here every week.

"This rapid growth presents new challenges for government, industry and the community, especially in terms of using our resources efficiently and wisely.

"I urge all Queenslanders to get involved in the Year of the Built Environment and discuss these important issues," Mr Mickel said.

Details of community and industry activities are available at www.ybe2004.qld.gov.au.

Representatives on the Year of the Built Environment 2004 steering committee include the State Government Architect, the Queensland Master Builders Association, Urban Development Institute of Australia, Housing Industry Association, Property Council Australia, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union and Department of Public Works representatives.
