Queensland firm to lay cornerstone at Kelvin Grove Village

The Queensland Government today announced Queensland firm Badcock Wright will develop the first two residential sites sold by the state government at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Premier Peter Beattie and Minister for Public Works and Housing Robert Schwarten said the Government released the prime solely residential sites (Lots 11 and 12) in November, through an invitation to submit offers.

"I'm delighted a Queensland-based company, Badcock Wright, has secured this development opportunity," Mr Beattie said.

"Being prime inner-city real estate, the sites attracted keen interest from developers wanting to be part of Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

"Badcock Wright's design and commercial qualities set its submission apart.

"It best met design guidelines in terms of sustainability, and integration with the streetscape and with other village development," Mr Beattie said.

Mr Schwarten said the proposed development on Lot 11 is for five townhouses, while Lot 12 will comprise a mixture of units and townhouses serviced by a gym, pool and internal common courtyard.

"Kelvin Grove Urban Village is really taking shape. It will be a world-class inner-urban development, incorporating residential, educational, health, retail and recreational facilities in one high-tech, environmentally sustainable village," Mr Schwarten said.

The Badcock Wright submission was a joint venture between the Wright Investment Group Pty Ltd, R & L Badcock Builders Pty Ltd, and the Indigo property development group.

Mr Schwarten said: "Badcock Wright and Indigo are currently joint venture partners in the $42 million Rivers on the Park development at Toowong and will bring their vast experience to Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

"Indigo is also developing the Village Centre, an integrated retail and residential development in the heart of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

"Indigo has developed other major projects in Brisbane including the Great Western Super Centre at Keperra and the Oasis residential development on Coronation Drive."

The Wright Investment Group Pty Ltd is headed by Greg Wright and has developed a range of industrial, retail, commercial and residential projects, including the Regency Downs residential estate and Enoggera Village retail Centre. R&L Badcock Builders Pty Ltd is headed by Ross Badcock and focuses on joint ventured townhouse and unit developments in inner Brisbane suburbs.

Kelvin Grove Urban Village is a joint initiative of the Department of Housing and the Queensland University of Technology to create a mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, only two kilometres from Brisbane's Central Business District.

The Village is being developed over the next six years, and will offer a variety of housing choices, educational and recreational facilities and commercial outlets.
