CUNNINGHAM CONGRATULATES PLANNING AWARD WINNERS

The Minister for Local Government and Planning, Nita Cunningham today congratulated The Courier Mail on taking out the overall award in the Planning Institute of Australia's 17th Awards for Excellence in Planning (Queensland Division).

Mrs Cunningham, who is Patron of the Awards in Queensland, said The Courier Mail's 'Our Future Your Say: Greenspace Series' was very successful in highlighting planning issues for South East Queensland.

"The Courier Mail has been able to capture the interest of residents in this region, encouraging them to have their say on how and why greenspace is important."

Mrs Cunningham also congratulated winners of the student category awards, sponsored by the Department of Local Government and Planning.

Department of Local Government and Planning School Students' Projects Category Catchment Studies - Kedron Brook Drainage System and Catchment By Anuradha Hapuarachchi, St Margaret's Anglican Girls School

She said each of the award recipients had submitted outstanding work and shown great insight into the practical problems facing local governments in applying town planning systems.

"This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the excellent work of these students and encourage greater awareness of planning issues," she said.

Mrs Cunningham also extended her congratulations to the nine other award winners.

"These Awards help acknowledge and encourage the vital work carried out by many people in the planning field and emphasise the important role of the planning profession. Category winners are now entered into the 2004 National Awards for Planning Excellence, " she said..
