Green Light For Key Village Site

Minister for Public Works and Housing Robert Schwarten today announced the Indigo Group was the successful bidder to develop the key retail and commercial site at the Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Mr Schwarten said Lot 14 was the first parcel of land to be sold by the Department of Housing to the private sector within the Kelvin Grove Urban Village and had been released to the market for sale through an invitation to submit offers.

"There was a lot of interest in the development and we received several high quality submissions," he said.

"All the development proposals we received were carefully assessed for their design and commercial qualities.

"In the end, Indigo's submission was superior in terms of commercial and design aspects and meets the benchmarks set for the village in terms of ecologically-sustainable development."

Mr Schwarten said Indigo had extensive experience and developed other major projects in Brisbane including the Great Western Super Centre at Keperra, the Oasis residential development on Coronation Drive and Rivers on the Park at Auchenflower.

The joint Managing Directors of the Indigo property development group are Lawry Truce and Mitchell Nielson.

"It is great to meet this milestone in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village development as this site will be the heart of the new village hub with a supermarket, retail shops, commercial space and residential apartments," Mr Schwarten said.

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village is being developed by the Department of Housing in partnership with the Queensland University of Technology to create a mixed-use development on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, which is two kilometres from Brisbane's Central Business District.

The village is being built over the next six years, and will incorporate a range of housing options, including affordable housing, and educational and recreational facilities, and commercial outlets.

"In total, we are expecting to deliver 200 affordable housing dwellings in the inner-city close to essential services through this development."
